About This Vacation
A week in Paris! Walk with the ghosts of Picasso, Matisse, Utrillo, Renoir through the cobblestones streets of Montmartre at the foot of Sacre Coeur in this vibrant "quartier" of Paris that still attracts artists today. One bedroom apartment in an 18th century building that was once a hotel where Jacques Brel lived when he first came to Paris as a young man. Apartment is on the 4th floor on the back of the building, which is quieter. The neighborhood abounds with boutique shops for men, women, children, or just general gifts, a large variety of restaurants, art galleries, theaters, live music, something for everyone. Climb or take the funicular to Sacre Coeur for one of the best views in Paris. Both Metro Abbesses and Metro Anvers are close, and the bus stops at the corner, so you can be anywhere in Paris within 15-20 minutes. Gare du Nord, where you catch Eurostar or the RER to the airport, is a 15 minute walk.
We loved the apartment and the location. Montmartre is full of Paris history, great cafes, restaurants and everything you need for a stay in Paris. I only wish we could have stayed longer. We had three people in our party and it was a perfect size. The owner is full of great information, is very helpful and easy to contact. - Angela P

ABOUT THE AREA: Montmartre is a vibrant area filled with wonderful shops and restaurants and some of the best views in Paris. Winding, cobblestoned streets, the stairs up to Sacre Coeur, beautiful neighborhoods with gardens tucked away are old Paris, the Paris that continues to inspire artists today and to draw them to live and work here. Enjoy the “vrai village” as Parisians describe Montmartre, greeting your neighbors as you shop for food, flowers, a dress or shirt that no one at home will have, a new piece of art for your home. Restaurants, music venues, theatre, all are in your Parisian village. Rue des Martyrs, made famous by Elaine Sciolino's "The Only Street in Paris: Life on the Rue des Martyrs" is one block from the apartment.
ABOUT THE APARTMENT: The apartment is open and full of light with floor to ceiling windows in both rooms, a queen size bed, a full sized dresser and closet in the bedroom as well as a queen size convertible bed with an excellent mattress in the salle de sejour. There is a second small closet in the salle de sejour so that 4 people can stay comfortably. Tastefully decorated throughout with a magnificent vintage movie poster and wall hanging for accent. Comfort and function work together to produce a wonderfully relaxing space. There is a flat screen TV, wifi, unlimited phone calls to the US and Canada as well as within France, a stereo and CD player.
The owners love to cook so the kitchen is completely functional, and they give you recommendations for local shopping and restaurants. You are provided with basic staples. Excellent green grocers, butchers, cheese shops, and a fish market are just around the corner. Prefer a supermarket? Two blocks away. Within three blocks you will find four prize winning bakeries. Don't like to cook? So many take-out options and all delicious.
THINGS TO DO: The Moulin Rouge with its wonderful show is within walking distance as is Sacre Coeur, the magnificent church that overseas Paris from the highest point in Paris. The area is filled with excellent restaurants, suggestions listed for you by the hosts, wine bars, music venues. One of the few remaining original metros by Guimard is here. Visit the atelier where Picasso, Matisse, Utrillo, and others worked. Sing and dine in Au Lapin Agile where they all used to "hang out"; it remains a traditional French cabaret. Visit the one remaining vineyard in Paris; see the remaining windmill.
LOCATION: The location could not be better. Between two metro stops, close to bus stops, you can be almost anywhere in Paris within 15 minutes. Gare du Nord, the home of Eurostar, is a 15 minute walk. Being on the north side of Paris, you are closer by taxi to the airport. And for walkers, one of the most interesting areas of Paris to stroll. All in all, a perfect location.
The apartment was just right. It is in a great area in Montmartre near everything you could want. Easy walk to Sacre Cour for daytime or evening time city watching as well as to metro stations for further exploration. We felt extremely welcome both before the visit and when we arrived. Lots of help and advise. We found the area very friendly and safe with hardly any noise from outside during our time in the apartment. We found the apartment is very comfortable and helped relax after a long day walking around Paris. - 84mac
